Cratere
2010
Earth, metal, wood;
600 x 400 x 600 cm
Cratere is a sculpture made from 50 m3 (75 tons) of earth from Holland, shaped using a structure of metal scaffold poles and wood. The quantity of earth used corresponds to the volume of a Second World War bomb crater in Zeeland. This crater can only be seen in an old photograph which clearly shows a bicycle wheel in the bottom of the crater. Calculations made on the basis of the bicycle wheel allowed the artist to work out the size of the crater and therefore the quantity of earth that the explosion would have displaced. That same amount of earth was then brought to the De Vleeshal space in Middelburg.
